ABOUT
I am a small batch ceramic artist and have always felt a sense of comfort from the tactile nature of creating with my hands. WHAT IS A SMALL BATCH CERAMIC ARTIST? -One who creates individual, limited-run pieces, using traditional methods rather than mass production. THIS IS MY SWEET SPOT! Playfully, I explore many mediums to express my creativity, but find the physicality of working with clay the most rewarding. Primarily working with hand-building techniques, I am able to connect with the raw clay in an immersive state, most effectively communicating my creative thought. Growing up in pastoral Louisiana landscapes, instilled in me a love of nature that has produced dynamic shape and movement in my work and has influenced my use of color and texture.

STORY

As creator and designer of Gretchen Murchison Ceramics, I am known for my handmade sculptural BLOOM BOWL collections, The alligator inspired LOUISIANA collection, The Queen Sophia Open Heart bud vase, the Cobalt Thistle vase, my Magnolia Grandiflora and Louisiana Pelican sculptures, and a number of additional works. My work explores the natural world of botanical and animal elements, textures and shapes. I find inspiration among my native wooded Louisiana and my favorite southern coastlines. Each collection is characterized by having fluid movement and functionality paired with aesthetic beauty. Aiming to inspire community and gathering together through shared experiences, my hope is that my work will grace your home and become a part of the life you've artfully curated. Recently, I've opened my own studio and gallery space in my hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana. With intention to grow and foster my brand, my studio is a full production facility where I create and exhibit my work.

In addition to my original ceramic works, I have proudly designed and created tabletop serve-ware collections for the company, Beatriz Ball, New Orleans.

GOALS

I’m always looking for the next opportunity to translate my everyday experiences into artistic expressions. Since 2016, I’ve led a life professionally devoted to the arts. Pursuing my professional art education later in life allowed me to acquire acute focus on the development of my art. I believe that inspiration can be found wherever you look. Much of my inspiration comes from the nature around me, predominantly from the rivers and bayous of Louisiana as well as oceanic coastlines of the southern gulf. My art is known as functional sculpture, artistic tableware design and stand alone sculpture. If my style speaks to you, I’d love to work with you in the future. Please be in touch to find out more and to discuss how we can curate pieces for you and your space.

ELEVATE EVERY GATHERING WITH UNIQUE CERAMIC ARTISTRY. GRETCHEN'S DESIGNS ARE FITTING FOR EVENT CELEBRATIONS, INTIMATE FAMILY GATHERINGS, AND STYLISH CURATED HOMES.

What is functional sculpture?

It's the art you can't live without. It's the piece that dresses the table and rings in celebrations. It's the constant comfort of a treasured collection. It's the statement piece that garners all the attention or the favored addition to the collection.  Functional sculpture is intended to be utilized, and Gretchen Murchison achieves this elegant versatility by enveloping her works in luxury, food safe glaze, creating vessels safe to use and beautiful to admire.
